Don't Find Lassa Fever Outbreak As Failure - Minister
Professor Isaac Adewole, the Minister of Health, has appealed to health practitioners all over the country never to see the outbreak of the Lassa fever as a failure.
Speaking during a telephone interview on Sunrise Daily on Monday, the Minister said that the outbreak Nigeria could not be reported by some states since they considered it to be an indicator of failure.
«Some of US will want to contemplate it as an indication of failure.
»I will say in Oyo State, we had a case of refusal, (but) when I met the Governor (Abiola Ajimobi), he was furious that he'd not want anybody to deny the existence of the case of Lassa fever in Oyo Nigeria News Headlines State but that we should forward to him, a proposition for active case fight and prevention on the other side of the state."
The Minister said the Ministry of Health is in touch with all Commissioners of Health on Health, stressing that they'd be meeting on Tuesday under the auspices of the National Council in the country.
He disclosed that the ministry would dispatch surveillance teams throughout the united states to keep down the amounts of recorded cases, and had.
Professor Adewole commended the actions of Governor Ajimobi in curtailing the spread of the illness, recommending that cases should not be hidden by citizens away from health authorities.
He revealed that health authorities had uncovered five cases which warned against a return of such and were not reported in Ebonyi State.
«I believe at professional degree, people must only admit that an outbreak should not be regarded as a fault in the system but as something to be reported and actively to be presented,» he said.
«We have also dispatched drugs to the state and we're reactivating all our treatment and diagnostic centres in a bid to ensure that we are able to make diagnosis quickly.
»We're also sending teams around the states to ensure that individuals uncover instances that hitherto, weren't reported."
Prof. Adewole also clarified how the ministry intended to President Muhammadu Buhari tackle situations in communities where the Lassa fever sufferers aren't able to make it to the hospital.
«What we'll activate will be community surveillance, where we've got a purposeful community surveillance, we will really get to know right in the city level,» he clarified.
The Minister encouraged Nigerian media organisations to emulate Channels Television's promotion of improved consciousness to alert the public on the spread of the illness and urged other state governments to also emulate Lagos State government's response to the outbreak.
«We also want to appreciate Lagos State which has activated the whole spectrum of prevention and management activities ranging from alarm, sufficient discovery together with treatment.
»Let me also say that even Channels Television needs to be commended. You have actively promoted a culture of improved consciousness with respect to Lassa fever," he said.
